2010

The registration of JOSAAB Foundation with the Ministry of Social Solidarity

The first nongovernmental organization serving terminally ill patients in Egypt was registered with the Ministry of Social Solidarity, under the license number 7800 for the year 2010.

Collaboration with German Palliative Care and Hospice Associations

Scientific support was provided through German palliative care and hospice associations and the translation of the theory from German into Arabic in means that is suiting the Egyptian culture.

2011

The Beginnings of the Mobile Hospice Services

In July 2011

collaborating with Global Cancer Care and El Hussein Hospital resulted in the referrals of terminally ill patients.

Collaboration with Global Cancer Care- Egypt

A written protocol with Global Cancer Care- Egypt was established and the referrals of terminally ill patients living in Embaba and Al Mounira.

2012

Recruiting the Mobile Hospice Team

During 2012, two medical doctors were recruited as Team Leaders.

Collaboration with El Hussein Hospital

A written protocol with El Hussein Hospital was established and the terminally ill patients are referred with an official medical report issued from the hospital.

Establishing Confidential Online System

An online system was established to document and report all the terminal cases that have been supported.

Geographical expansion, reaching patients in both Cairo and Qalyubia

The Hospice Egypt project has served patients living in Greater Cairo including Giza, Cairo and Qalyubia governorate.

Collaboration with El Haggana Hospital at Kilo 4.5

JOSAAB Foundation collaborated with El Haggana Hospital at kilo 4.5, in order to provide the Hospice Egypt project with qualified nurses trained to support terminally ill patients.

2014

Buying a Land for Building a Stationary Hospice

A land was bought in order to build a stationary hospice. The land is located 49 KM on Cairo-ISmailia Desert Road and is 1500 m2 in area. It is built to receive terminal patients who don't have anyone to care for them.

Collaboration with EL Demerdash Hospital

Collaborating with El Demerdash Hospital and the Hospice Egypt project began receiving referrals from them.

Integrating Caregivers

The Hospice Egypt project integrated caregivers into serving terminally ill patients, they were provided through El Haggana Hospital at Kilo 4.5.

Introducing Social Media

A Facebook page was launched to disseminate the idea and spread awareness about the Hospice Egypt services.

2015

Collaboration with Health Insurance Hospitals

Terminally ill patients were referred from Nasr City Health Insurance Hospital and Al Mokattam Health Insurance Hospital.

Geographical expansion, reaching patients in Sharkia governorate

The Hospice Egypt project served terminal patients living in Sharkia governorate, and thus expanding the provision of mobile hospice services to a fourth governorate.

Documentary Film

A documentary film was made and it is about terminally ill patients receiving Hospice Egypt services.

Construction of the Stationary Hospice building

The ground floor of the stationary hospice building was finished and the construction of the rest of the floors is still in progress.

2016

Furnishing the Stationary Hospice Building

A German technical expert visited the stationary hospice building and supervised in the furnishing of specific equipment that help preserve the dignity and privacy of terminally-ill patients.

Signing a protocol of collaboration with the Egyptian Healthcare Management Society

JOSAAB Foundation signed a protocol of collaboration with the Egyptian Healthcare Management Society, the only entity which represents the union of private health care companies in Egypt.

2017

Gross increase in number of patients by 17% compared to 2016

Increase in the total number of received terminally-ill patients for mobile hospice services compared to last year.

Networking with the Deutsche Evangelische Oberschule Kairo

JOSAAB Foundation networked with the Deutsche Evangelische Oberschule Kairo and some of the fundraising activities undertaken in school were directed to supporting the Hospice Egypt project.

International Membership in the World Hospice and Palliative Care Alliance (WHPCA)

JOSAAB Foundation through undertaking the Hospice Egypt project, has proudly become the first Egyptian NGO to gain organizational membership to the World Hospice and Palliative Care Alliance (WHPCA).

2018

Launching of a mobile-friendly website

Hospice Egypt launched a new website that is easy-to-use and to browse via the mobile phone.

Production of animated films explaining the hospice concept and the mission of the foundation

Raising awareness about the hospice concept and services is one of the most vital roles of the Hospice Egypt team. With the purpose to disseminate the idea and reach out to those in need of hospice services Hospice Egypt use several tools to explain the hospice concept, including lectures, periodic newsletters, and one of the main achievements is the production of an animated film explaining the Hospice Egypt project and its various services in an engaging and simplified form.

The beginning of a collaboration with Baheya foundation to support patients with terminal illnesses

Hospice Egypt approached Baheya Foundation to collaborate in serving patients with terminal illnesses. Both foundations share the importance of the continuum of care for the terminally ill patients through the provision of Hospice services, and agreed to refer cases in need to Hospice Egypt.

Annual volunteer training on “How to Deal with the Different Stages of Grief that the Patients and their Families Go Through”

Annually, the team of volunteers at Hospice Egypt receive training in topics related to services provided by the Hospice. In 2018, Dr. Martina, a psychiatrist, and a volunteer with Hospice Egypt, explained the different stages of grief and how can the team and the volunteers support patients and their families while going through them.

2019

Signing a collaborative protocol with Baheya Organization and Hospital

In June of 2019 and in attempts to continuing the fruitful collaboration between the Hospice Egypt project and Baheya Hospital, both entities have agreed to signing a formal protocol to establish and facilitate the flow of referred cases from Baheya hospital in being provided hospice services and to work collaboratively on media coverage with the aims of disseminating the hospice concept and services. In the events of the celebratory meeting that was held,representatives from both parties signed the formal paper respectively Dr. Tandiar Samir, General Manager of the JOSAAB Foundation – Hospice Egypt Project and Engineer MagedHamdy, Baheya Hospital board member.

Extended the Foundation’s activities to reach the sides of Fayoum governorate close to Cairo

Through the constant aim of the Hospice Egypt project to reach and serve the many terminally-ill patients and families in need of hospice services in Egypt, the organization has broadened its reach to cover Fayoum governorate and is now serving terminally-ill patients in 5 different governorates: Cairo, Giza, Qalioubiya, Sharqia and Fayoum.

2020

Signing a protocol of collaboration between Hospice Egypt and the National Cancer Institute

As a continuation of the cooperation that Hospice Egypt started with the National Cancer Institute last year within the framework of Hospice Egypt’s humanitarian and community mission, which aims to provide care and preserve the dignity of patients in their last days, a protocol was signed between the Dean of the National Cancer Institute, Professor Dr. Hatem Abul-Qasim and Dr. Tandiar Samir, General manager of Josaab Foundation for Community Development in the presence of Prof. Dr. Tarek Khairy, (Vice Dean for Environmental Affairs and Community Service), Professor Dr. Mohamed Al-Wasif (Director General of the Hospital), and Prof. Dr. Ahmed Helmy (Head of the Institute's Pain Treatment Unit). This collaboration aims to support terminally ill patients by providing them with free of charge hospice services. Prof. Dr. Tarek Khairy, Vice Dean of the Institute, praised the importance of the services that Hospice Egypt provides free-of -charge to cancer patients in their last days, which include medical care such as providing medical beds, oxygen cylinders, air mattresses, nursing and social care, as well as psychological and material support for the patient and his family. Annually, about 10% of patients attending the Institute of Oncology need Hospice services.

2021

Hospice Egypt foundation’s board of trustees nominated Prof. Dr. Ahmed Sameh Farid as chairman of the board of trustees

The foundation's board of trustees nominated Prof. Dr. Ahmed Sameh Farid as chairman of the board of trustees for the coming term believing his participation will support the foundation strategy to achieve its goals. Prof FARID’s great experience in the field of healthcare as former minister of health and former Dean of the Cairo university faculty of Faculty of medicine - Kasr Al Aini as well as in the field of higher education being former chairman of the education and research committee in the Egyptian Parliament and currently being the president of the world class Newgiza University - NGU will be a great added value. Prof Farid accepting this nomination stated: “I’m truly honored and appreciating the board nomination and look forward to work with great enthusiasm to achieve the vision of both NGU and Hospice Egypt in enhancing its community service being a Member in United Nations academic impact in health which is one of the UN 17 sustainable development goals”. Prof Farid added: “The university is deeply involved in community services either through its community hospital or medical convoys with the participation of both staff and students. Being the university President and Chairman of the board of trustees of Hospice Egypt, a new ambitious role will develop in supporting the unique services offered by Hospice Egypt involving our university Staff, faculty and students in helping patients and families. Our duty as healthcare professionals and NGOs is to serve our society in the best way we can and I truly believe we can ".

Signing a protocol of collaboration between Hospice Egypt foundation and Rotary of the Rotary District 2451

On January 21st, 2021, a meeting was held to sign a protocol of collaboration between Hospice Egypt presented in the signature by Dr. Tandiar Samir, General Manager of Hospice Egypt, and Rotary of the Rotary District 2451, presented in the signature by Mr. Osama Al-Ahmar, Governor of Rotary District 2451, with the aim of joint cooperation to serve terminally ill patients and their families. The meeting included an introductory seminar in which Dr. Samir explained the concept of hospice and its global presence. She clarified Hospice Egypt’s free of charge services and that in Egypt alone, 254 thousand patients are in need of Hospice services yearly. Mr. Osama showed his gratefulness regarding having a hospice in Egypt. He stressed on the importance of expanding the scope of work and Hospice Egypt’s services nationwide to reach the largest possible number of these patients who are in their last days due to their entitlement to quality of life and dignity until the last moment. The attendees interacted with Hospice Egypt and a discussion was held about the process of referring cases to Hospice Egypt.

Hospice Egypt signed a protocol of Collaboration with Ain Shams University Student Scientific Society – AUSSS

In January 2021, Hospice Egypt signed a protocol of collaboration with Ain Shams University Student Scientific Society – AUSSS. The collaboration aims to spread the concept of hospice and Hospice Egypt services among students of the University's Faculty of Medicine and provide students with vital skills in their medical profession in the future. It has been agreed to implement a plan of action that includes a training and awareness program for students of the Faculty of Medicine - Ain Shams University . This cooperation will help in achieving Hospice Egypt mission in preserving dignity of the patient until the last moment in his life and enable the foundation to serve more patients in need for hospice care.

Hospice Egypt open its free of charge psychological clinic at National Cancer Institute (NCI)

In July 2021, the Hospice Egypt Psychological Support Clinic was opened at the National Oncology Institute to provide free of charge psychological support to the terminally ill patients and their families coming to the institute. This cooperation is an essential step within the protocol of cooperation between Hospice Egypt- Josaab Foundation and the National Institute of Oncology. Thanks.

Signing a protocol of collaboration between Hospice Egypt and AIESEC

In March 2021, a protocol of collaboration was signed between Hospice Egypt project - Josaab foundation for social development and AIESEC organization that works on youth empowerment. The collaboration aims to spread the concept of Hospice Egypt services provided free of charge to terminally ill patients and their families & to give young youth volunteers opportunities from different countries the skills and information on community work in general and how to volunteer in the service of end-of-life pat

2022

Joint cooperation between Hospice Egypt and Viatris Pharmaceutical Company

In January 2022, Hospice Egypt and the Social Responsibility Unit of Viatris International Pharmaceutical Company cooperated to support and cover the cost of the psychological support component for patients in their last days and their families. The psychological support is a major essential component of Hospice services, which Hospice Egypt provides free of charge. The project steps will cover the following themes

• Covering the running cost of psychologists and psychiatrists to continue providing the mental health support in NCI three days per week to not only for the terminally ill patients but also to their families.
• Covering the cost of individual mental support for terminally ill patients and their families at their home
• Group therapy: two groups therapy per month for two different groups of Hospice Egypt staff members and volunteers.
• Covering the cost of individual psychological sessions to support the overwhelmed staff members.

The Egyptian Medical Syndicate collaborated with Hospice Egypt

In March 2022; the Egyptian Medical Syndicate collaborated with Hospice Egypt by sponsoring an annual announcement of the Hospice Egypt project and services in the medical yearbook issued by the Medical Syndicate with the aim of informing doctors about the existence of the free of charge Hospice Egypt services provided by the foundation to the terminally ill patients in the governorates of Cairo, Giza, Qalyubia and Sharqia. It is worth mentioning that this booklet is distributed nationwide.

2023

Hospice Egypt workshop for students of the Faculty of Pharmacy at the British University

Under the auspices of Prof. Dr. Mohy El Maraz, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy at the British University in Egypt, and organized by Prof. Dr. Osama Badary, the faculty hosted members of Hospice Egypt to hold a workshop for students of the elective palliative care course in the faculty on Wednesday, April 12, 2023. The workshop included an introductory lecture given by Dr. Rania Younis, in which she talked about the global concept of palliative care for patients in their last days, scientifically known as Hospice care, and about Hospice Egypt, the leading institution of civil society and its various services that are provided to patients in their last days for free in the governorates of Greater Cairo. It also included a workshop Work Presenting different models of disease cases under the auspices of Hospice Egypt, and discussing with students how to provide them with service in a way that preserves their dignity and alleviates the patient's physical and psychological suffering. The meeting was an excellent opportunity to highlight the role of the pharmacist as one of the active members of the Hospice team and to enhance the contribution of the university and students with civil society institutions.

Hospice Egypt participation in the international scientific conference for Hematology - Ain Shams University

The Hospice Egypt team participated in the eleventh international conference organized by the Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University, under the slogan "Lighting the Fire for Updates on Hematology and Oncology" on June 14, 15, 2023, chaired by Prof. Dr. Mohamed Osama Azazi, under the auspices of Dr. Mohamed Awad Tag El Din, Senior Advisor The Republic for Health and Preventive Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Mahmoud El-Metini, President of Ain Shams University, and Dr. Ali Al-Anwar, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University, with the aim of introducing doctors to the free medical, nursing and psychological services of Hospice Egypt, which are provided to patients in their late stages, and researched Ways of cooperation to provide specialized home care for this category of patients and how to preserve their dignity in their last days.

Al-Ahram Canadian University Invites Hospice Egypt to participate in the Employment Forum of the Faculty of Pharmacy

Hospice Egypt received an invitation from the Faculty of Pharmacy - Al-Ahram Canadian University - to participate in the activities of the third employment forum at the university’s headquarters in 6th of October City, on Saturday and Sunday, corresponding to 17 and 18 June 2023, which was organized under the auspices of the Community Service and Sustainable Development Committee to contribute to introducing students and graduates to the concept of hospice and Hospice Egypt's free services as the first civil institution to take care of terminal illnesses and to know the role and responsibility of the pharmacist, whether by working as a member of the Hospice team or by various forms of volunteering to serve this category of patients and their families to take care of them and preserve their dignity.
